Engineers' coolstore review in December

The engineering review of coolstore design initiated by the Institute of Professional Engineers (IPENZ) after the Icepak coolstore fire in Tamahere is underway, says Cameron Smart, IPENZ engineering practice manager.

As mentioned here the review will inquire into coolstore design with particular emphasis on refrigeration fluids, insulation techniques, sprinkler technology, appropriate structures, and other matters pertinent to the engineering design of coolstores.

Smart said the first draft of the practice note that will result from the review is expected to be ready for peer review in September.

After being peer reviewed the amended draft will be posted on the members-only part of the IPENZ website to enable general membership review. That could mean further amendments.

“We plan to publish the completed work on the public part of our website in December this year,” Smart said.

The engineers’ review is just one of several inquiries into the Tamahere coolstore fire. Others are underway by the Fire Service, Department of Labour and the Coroner.
