The first anniversary of the April 5 explosion and fire at Icepak coolstores at Tamahere draws near.

The Sunday Star Times is the first in the news media to report on the situation at Tamahere one-year on. A feature story on Sunday March 22 by Susan Pepperell found that “the scars are far from healed for the firemen and the community – and there are still many unanswered questions.”

The story revealed that the Fire Service last month produced a 16-page report documenting the progress made on its recommendations in the September 2008 report into the Tamahere fire.

The paper also reported that Hamilton firefighters have planned commemoration events, which include the presentation of three plaques – one to the Tamahere community, one to hospital staff and the other in memory of fireman Derek Lovell, who was killed by the blast, which will be put in the Angelsea St fire station.

When known, details of commemoration events will be posted on the Tamahere Forum.

Tamahere Forum will link to the newspaper report, headlined Fighting Spirit, if and when it is available online.
