The Tamahere Community Committee aims to co-ordinate a community-wide response to the proposed Southern Links road route through Tamahere.

The preferred route from Tamahere Drive across the Waikato River to Kahikatea Drive was outlined at information days earlier this month, showing it carving through individual properties and the Narrows Golf Course.

The committee plans to canvas what challenge could be made to the project and is inviting people to share their concerns and views with it.

“We are very keen to find out what the feelings are within the community about this new route so we can adequately represent their views,” said committee member Ro Edge.

Birchwood Lane

Tenders have now been invited for the partial construction of the Birchwood Lane extension, which will run parallel with Newell Rd, eventually linking the lane to Devine Rd.

Currently, Waikato District Council funding does not allow for the road to be fully constructed and part of its route, at the Devine Rd end, will be formed but not sealed, the committee heard at its December meeting.

Tauwhare Rd footpath

A draft plan for a footpath along Tauwhare Rd from Woodcock Rd to the SH1 underpass is now before the district council. A number of concerns about safety have been raised by the committee and other community members about the path’s proximity to the busy road, particularly as truck access to the Titoki Sands quarry will be from Tauwhare Rd.

The committee heard that there will be no barrier between the road and footpath but after concerns were raised the path was widened to increase safety. “However, many in the community are not happy with the safety of the footpath,” the committee noted.
