Water use still restricted

Water restrictions remain unchanged for now with the Waikato District and Hamilton City councils thanking residents and large water users for their efforts to conserve water, particularly in recent days.

The district and city remain on Water Alert Level 2 restrictions – alternate day watering from 6-8am and 6-8pm only.

However, the councils continue to closely monitor the situation and say restrictions could heighten if water use rises.

Hamilton City Council City Waters Manager Tim Harty said due to a fall in water use in the last few days, the decision was made this morning not to move today to the Alert Level 3, which had been anticipated.

“I’d like to thank all water users in the city for their efforts to conserve water and and for observing the current water restrictions. The fall over the past few days in water use has also been helped by the recent rainfall and cooler weather, but with more hot weather on the way and no rain forecast over the next week it’s important we continue to keep up this good work.”

Waikato District Council Water and Facilities General Manager, Richard Bax said it was great to see that people were making changes to the way they view and use water.

“Even though we have a large river flowing through our region, it’s important to realise that water is not an unlimited resource. We all need to take appropriate steps to conserve water wherever possible to ensure a consistent supply throughout the summer.”

A range of methods are being used around the city and district to ensure residents are aware of water restrictions, including posters, signs on arterial routes, electronic message boards, social media and newspaper advertising. Direct contact is ongoing with major water users.

To date Waikato District Council has received few complaints around improper water use however Hamilton City Council has received 60 complaints. The councils follow up all these complaints to ensure people are aware of the current restrictions.
