Planning is underway for the Tamahere hub sports grounds.
At its August meeting, the Tamahere Community Committee said it was keen to get locals’ input into a concept plan for the grounds alongside Tamahere School, including on a name for the area.
The committee felt naming the area the Tamahere Sports Park was too restrictive given the potential wide use of the area and mooted the name, Tamahere Village Green.
Planning for the sports park is part of the Waikato District Council’s district-wide Sports and Recreation Management Plan. A draft plan is expected to be available in December this year with hearings held in April next year.
TCC said it would like to reserve space for existing users, including environmental, sports and school groups. It will be updated on the management plan at each monthly meeting.
Development of the sports ground is separate from the associated commercial precinct but the committee said it was keen to ensure that all facets of the village hub fitted together.
The committee along with the council hopes to attract a property developer interested in exploring the opportunities presented by the village hub but acknowledged at the meeting that there were complex issues yet to be resolved including the boundaries between private and public spaces.
