New road changes routes

Tamahere’s newest road, Wiremu Tamihana Drive, between Devine and Airport roads, is about to open and will herald several changes for drivers.

One of the key differences will be the permanent closure of the right-hand turn on to the State Highway 1 on-ramp at the end of Devine Rd.

Work is to begin on the on-ramp from Monday, November 10 and should be completed in two weeks.

Once finished there will be no right-hand turn towards the Airport Rd roundabout. Instead drivers will access Airport Rd via Wiremu Tamihana Drive.

Traffic management signs will be in place to guide drivers through the changes, especially because of the large amount of school traffic.

Wiremu Tamihana Drive will open from December 15, which will coincide with the permanent closure of the Newell Road-Airport Rd intersection. The measure has been taken to avoid two live intersections operating in close proximity to each other.

Newell Rd has long been used as a short cut or rat run to Airport Rd instead of SH 1 and the reconfiguration of the roads will help remove around 500 through-traffic vehicles from the community.

As well as road signs updates on the changes will be here on the Waikato District Council website, and here on its Facebook page.
