The area zoned for the development by the Waikato District Council, which owns the land, is on the corner of Devine Rd and Wiremu Tamihana Drive and has been dubbed Tamahere Village.

The zoning provides for “a cluster of retail and commercial service convenience stores predominantly servicing the local community’s day to day retail requirements.”

The council is now looking for a development partner to help create a “modern village” and has appointed property agency, Greenstone Group, to seek expressions of interest in the development, which has a gross floor area of 2000 sq metres.

Greenstone is looking for “qualified property groups to work exclusively with the council on creating a ‘vibrant village with specialty food, services, retail and offices and a central piazza’”.

The retail centre borders a bigger area of land, also owned by the council, which will eventually be developed into sports and recreation grounds and a village green.

Lengthy community consultation preceded the zoning of the area and included a design guide and concept plan for the look of the retail development and the landscaping of the surrounding area.

The latest move to bring the village centre closer to reality has been welcomed.

Tamahere Councillor Wally Hayes indicated his excitement recently about a project which he feels will enhance Tamahere’s popularity as the lifestyle area of choice.

“Because of its location and attractive country living lifestyle, Tamahere is one of the highest growth areas within Waikato district. The closure of Newell Road on to the busy Airport Road, and the construction of Wiremu Tamihana Drive have opened up exciting opportunities that enable the creation of a modern village.

“Council has already invested in significant infrastructure for this area with the intention of supporting significant growth over the next 10 years.”
