Call out for youth leaders

The call is out for young, Tamahere community leaders or would-be leaders to come out of the shadows.
Tamahere young people were nowhere to be seen among the 52 nominations in last year’s inaugural Waikato District youth awards.

This year, the call is out early for young people aged from 15 to 24 to join a Tamahere Youth Action Group whose aim will be to create or take on local projects.

Council youth engagement advisor Shannon Kelly is inviting Tamahere youngsters to contact her if they are interested in being active in community projects, are keen to hone their leadership skills or be a voice for youth locally.

Last May, when nominations flowed into the awards from all over the district except Tamahere Kelly had faith that there were Tamahere young people with talent. They were just not coming forward.

“I think there are some fantastic young people doing amazing work in Tamahere and I would have really loved to showcase that talent at the awards this year,” she told Tamahere Forum.

This year, Tamahere people again have a chance to prove her right.

To kickstart the process contact Kelly on 027 405 6450, by emailing or on Facebook at /shannonkelly

Inspiration for aspiring young leaders can be found in the wealth of nominations for last year’s awards, which can be found here.

I really encourage all 15 – 24 year olds in Tamahere to get involved -start by giving Shannon a ring on 027 405 6450. There’s great initiatives already underway elsewhere in the district, tackling eco and recycling challenges for example, and here’s a great opportunity to be part of a Tamahere group from the very start. Shannon will help in working out what the group might like to get involved in -and she even has a little bit of money to kick-start projects!

Don’t be shy -give it a go!!
