Locals are getting behind a fundraiser for a Vanuatu family that could set them on a path to a better, more secure life.

Liz Donovan, a Tamahere School parent, is showing the movie Despicable Me 3 at Metro Cinemas, Hamilton at 4pm on Saturday, July 8 as a fundraiser for her brother-in-law’s family in Vanuatu.

The fundraising goal is to enable the family in Vanuatu to buy an income-generating boat that will give them transport, enable them to fish, feed their family and provide an income.

Another option for supporting the family is this Give A Little page.

The family of Cassia Donovan and her husband Nico Isaiah live on the Vanuatu island of Malo, where there is no permanent, full time work available.

The New Zealand-based family’s heartfelt goal is to give their island relatives resources, starting with a boat, that will give them a stable income.

By providing a boat, they will be able to have transport to Luganville on the main island of Espirito Santo, and go fishing.

“This should provide the family with at least three, full-time incomes, supply enough for the whole family to eat, give them funds for the children’s education, and help them build up decent living conditions. They currently have no running water or power,” Cassia says on the Give A Little page.

“These jobs will create a surplus over and above wages that will be used for insurance, maintenance and petrol for the boat and enough for savings should an emergency arise. And we hope that it will eventually be enough to buy a ute which will create another job for the family.”

Nico has put together a business plan and the aim is to raise around $20,000. Anything raised above that will be put toward the purchase of the ute.
