Maps show fast internet area

Ultrafast Fibre, the company bringing fast broadband to Tamahere and Matangi, has released maps of the area it will serve with fibre.

Tamahere Councillor Aksel Bech said the release of the detail was exciting progress.

“We now know that the area within the yellow line on the map will get fibre under the government’s ultra fast broadband 2+ initiative and that it must be completed by the end of 2019,” Bech said.

“That means the last street will be finished by then [end of 2019].”

It was also an opportunity for those on the outside of the boundary line. If groups of people joined together to request UFB he would lobby on their behalf, Bech said.

Confirmation that Tamahere and Matangi would be included in the government provision of ultrafast broadband only came in August.

Being in the programme means that the government underwrites the capital cost of installing the fibre.

It also means that fibre would, in the case of most households, be offered to the house without extra installation costs, rather than to the gate, Bech told Tamahere Forum in August.

The distance between properties in Tamahere and their often long driveways had made it difficult to find fibre providers who could offer a standard installation price, Bech said.

But the government involvement meant that Tamahere residents should be able to take up fibre deals advertised by retailers with the cost being the same as for someone living in middle of Hamilton.
