Explosions and a massive plume of black smoke signalled a major fire at the Raynes Rd premises of Penguin Pools last night.

Fire and Emergency arrived at the scene, near Hamilton Airport, at 7.07pm and battled throughout the night to control the fire. The building housed swimming pools and hay bales.

Tamahere local Rory Forde was on site working for agricultural company, Finch Contracting, and his quick actions saved a tractor from the inferno.

There was nothing else they could do but dial 111 for emergency services, Forde said of the blaze that was seen for miles across the countryside.

At least 2000 large bales of hay went up in smoke, worth around $200,000. He was gutted, he said.

More than 20 firefighters from Hamilton, Te Awamutu, Ngaruawahia, Cambridge, Pirongia and Morrinsville assisted, northern communications shift manager Colin Underdown told the Waikato Times.

“We’ve got a pump and a command unit still out there. We’ve been there all night,” Underdown said today. “They’ve been having a rotating crew out there through the night just to maintain it. Today they are going to get back into it when daylight comes.

“Because half the building was full of hay bales they are going to have to pull those out or else it would just smoulder away.”

Plumes of smoke could be seen for kilometres around.

Underdown said there were five fire trucks and five water tankers at the scene throughout the night.

Waikato police senior sergeant Pete Simpson said police would be advised of the situation once fire investigators have accessed the scene. Fire investigators will begin their work later today.
