Playground proves magnet

Tamahere’s new skatepark and children’s playground is proving a magnet for skaters, bikers, scooters, kids and their parents.

It’s the second weekend in a row that people have flocked to the new facility … but this weekend the fences were down to allow for easier access.

When Tamahere Forum stopped by the area was packed with kids of all ages trying out the new play equipment or doing spectacular tricks on wheels on the skatepark.

The new playground is proving very popular

But one rider said the big crowd at the Wiremu Tamihana Drive area had already thinned from earlier in the day.

Happy crowds all weekend appear to testify to the attractiveness of the range of play equipment and the design of the skatepark.

The crowds give a vote of approval to the new playground

It’s really exciting to see so many smiling faces in the play and skate areas -build it and they certainly came! A reminder that it is still a “work in progress” with toilets, drinking fountains, seating, bike racks, fitness trail, covered stage, some signage etc etc to come -but we just wanted to give access as soon as it was safe to do so.

I just wanted to confirm that the official opening will take place on Friday 28 June at 1pm -and everyone is invited. It will be a short (30 to 40 minute) celebration and is intended to include a blessing, couple of speeches and then children doing the honours of cutting the ribbon and a tree planting. There will also be a skateboard demo and I understand from school they plan to debut their new school haka -it will be a special way to mark a real milestone for the Tamahere Community.

    Hope to see you there!

    Aksel.
