Work on the Waikato Expressway, including at Tamahere, may need to continue through winter – if weather allows – to make up for time lost during the Covid-19 lockdown.

SH1 traffic is to be switched on to new lanes running under the East West Link Bridge in July or earlier.
This will affect access to Cherry Lane, Bollard Road and the section of Cambridge Road in between.
Construction project staff will be at the Tamahere Community Centre from 4pm-7pm on Wednesday, June 19 to demonstrate how the new road layout will work, and answer questions.Read more
A delay is likely in the roll out of the ultrafast broadband network in the Cherry Lane and Bollard Road areas.
The hold up comes because of work restrictions placed on contractors Ultra Fast Fibre from the Waikato Expressway construction in the same area.
“The latest we now expect to be able to connect anyone in this area is from 1st September,” said Mike Ryan of UFF.Read more
State Highway 1 through Tamahere central is festooned with orange cones as tarsealing of the former median strip is carried out between the Airport Rd turn off and Bollard Rd.
This will allow traffic to be shifted from the road proper while trees are felled, phone and electricity cables are relocated, and the connection to the expressway constructed.
Some of the many cones will be replaced with permanent ‘SafeHits’.Read more
Waikato Expressway pile driving will restart from Thursday for the bridge to span State Highway 1 at Cherry Lane.
Six piles will be driven 35 to 40 metres into the ground at the western abutment to complete piling at the East/West Link Bridge.
This will take about three weeks to complete bringing increased noise and vibration for nearby residents. (See piling video)Read more
Waikato Expressway contractors are making an early start on the piles for the bridge which will span State Highway 1 at Cherry Lane.
The thud of pile driving is now set to begin later this month as preparations for the East-West bridge get underway two months earlier than planned.
A big, blue, 100 tonne crawler crane will be assembled on the site alongside SH1 in northern Tamahere when piling is about to begin.Read more
The once treed view alongside State Highway 1 close to Hamilton has rapidly given way to brown earthworks since early January as the latest section of the Waikato Expressway to effect Tamahere steps up pace.
Construction has begun of a new, two-lane Cambridge Rd off-ramp into Hamilton, east of the current SH1, opposite Cherry Lane.
The off-ramp is part of what will be something of a spaghetti junction which will eventually include an east/west bridge connecting Cherry Lane and Bollard Road with Cambridge Road and Birchwood Lane.Read more
The latest design for Tamahere’s upcoming spaghetti junction – the Waikato Expressway’s Hamilton section southern interchange – is again open for public viewing.
For those who missed the first information session a month ago, the design for the complex State Highway 1 interchange centred on Cherry Lane is set to transform the local road network in northern Tamahere.
NZTA and its contractors will reveal the latest design at an information day in the Tamahere Community Centre on Wednesday, September 14 from 2.30pm to 7pm.
