Easter shopping cracked open

All retail shops in the Waikato district will be able to open on Easter Sunday this year.

The Waikato District Council adopted the Easter Trading Policy 2017 at yesterday’s Council meeting, after a recommendation from its Policy and Regulatory Committee last month.

Submissions on the policy were evenly split but the council decision means individual business owners can make their own choice about whether they open or not.

Easter trading gets support

All retail shops in the Waikato district will be able to open on Easter Sunday if a recommendation by a council committee gets full council approval.

The Waikato District Council Policy and Regulatory Committee today recommended that the Proposed Easter Trading Policy 2017 is adopted at the full council meeting in April.

The majority of submissions on the policy – 656 of 1268 or 51% – were in favour of shops being able to open on Easter Sunday.

Do you want shops to open on Easter Sunday?

That’s the question the Waikato District Council is asking after a legislation change allowed it to develop a policy that would allow shops to open on Easter Sunday, a day most shops have traditionally shut.

At the moment shops can only open on Easter Sunday if they meet strict criteria but that would change under the new policy.
