Fonterra fire case settled

Dairy giant Fonterra has settled a claim against companies in the Icepak coolstore group for the loss of $25 million of cheese in the 2008 Tamahere fire that claimed the life of a firefighter.

The case was settled last October in a confidential out-of-court settlement.

In January 2011, Fonterra was given permission to sue the owners of the Tamahere coolstore, Icepak Group Ltd.

Fonterra sues Icepak Group for $25M

Dairy giant Fonterra has been given permission to sue the owners of the Tamahere coolstore that exploded in 2008 for $25 million worth of cheese that it lost in the blaze.

Fonterra has already filed papers against the lessee of the building, Waikato Coldstorage Ltd (formerly Icepak Coolstores Ltd), as well as Mobile Refrigeration Specialists Ltd, which carried out refrigeration work at the cool store.

Now Justice Rodney Hansen has allowed Fonterra to include the owners and lessors of the Tamahere plant, Icepak Group Ltd, as an additional defendant in the action.

Rimmington has tilt two at board

Tamahere farmer and former Hamilton mayor Russ Rimmington is standing for election to the board of dairy co-operative Fonterra for the second time.

Rimmington, who has farmed for more than 30 years, is one of five shareholders going for three seats on the board. Also standing is Maurice Hardie from Papamoa and incumbent directors Sir Henry van der Heyden, Fonterra’s chairman, Ian Farrelly, of Te Awamutu, and Malcolm Bailey, of Manawatu.
