More Newell Rd blockage to come

Feb 16th, 2017 | By

More disruption to traffic at the State Highway 1 – Newell Rd intersection is expected as reconstruction of the crumbling culvert under SH1 winds up.

More than $769,000 worth of repairs of the colourfully named Dreadnought Culvert began just over a week ago and is expected to finish, depending on weather, in about a week’s time.

A large amount of heavy machinery, including a crane, has been needed for the reconstruction, requiring Newell Rd to be closed off at the intersection with SH1 as it was moved in.

Wiremu Tamihana Drive, the new road between Devine and Airport roads, will be open from Monday, December 15.

Named in honour of the Ngati Haua chief and peacemaker who is Tamahere’s first person of historic significance, the road will be blessed by Ngati Haua to ensure the safe passage of people who use it.

After months of rough roads and stop/go controls the welcome opening of Wiremu Tamihana Drive means there will no longer be access to Airport Road from Newell Road and vice versa.

Progress good on new road

Wiremu Tamihana Drive, the new road being constructed between Airport and Devine Roads, is progressing well despite wet weather.

From later this month until late August, contractors Fulton Hogan will be widening Airport Rd at the intersection with Wiremu Tamihana Drive to allow for slip lanes, reported the Waikato District Council in its latest update.

When the road is completed in December it will bring about a number of changes, including the closure of the right hand turn from Devine Rd down the SH 1 on-ramp.

Link road gets underway

Construction of a new, 470m road linking Devine and Airport roads gets underway this month.

The initial work on the $2.5million contract, being undertaken by Fulton Hogan for the Waikato District Council, won’t have a direct effect on traffic movement as it’s based on council land currently used for grazing from Devine Rd north of Tamahere School to Airport Rd, near Regal Haulage.

The final 25m wide corridor will include a two-lane road plus berms, plus a parking and maneuvering area, said the council in the first newsletter of a series designed to inform locals about the project.

A contract to build a new road linking Devine and Airport Roads is expected to get underway within two weeks, triggering a number of far reaching changes in Tamahere.

The $2.5 million contract, to be undertaken by Fulton Hogan, includes not only the 470m link road but carparks for future sports fields at the long heralded village hub, changes to the Devine Rd-SH1 on-ramp intersection, and a new-style intersection at the other end of Devine Rd where it joins Newell Rd.

The contract also covers alterations to Airport Rd, allowing for slip or deceleration lanes, at the link road intersection and, most far reaching of all, the closure of Newell Rd at Airport Rd.

Newell Rd works raise ire

Jun 16th, 2013 | By

The Newell Rd roadworks, partially finished and now on hold until spring, have been condemned as a “disaster” and an “appalling waste of money”.

Responding to this earlier story, several residents commented at length about the deficiencies of the project and its design.

Their concerns are worth highlighting and so is a correction to the earlier story.

Roadworks shelved for winter

May 28th, 2013 | By

Roadworks on Newell Road are to be put on hold for the winter.

The Waikato District Council and the contractor, HEB Construction, have decided that due to deteriorating weather the project, which includes resealing and adding a footpath will be completed in spring or early summer.

UPDATE: The project, originally expected to cost $736,580, had been scheduled to be finished by May 10.

Drive, walk or bus – changes ahead

Apr 28th, 2013 | By

A flurry of activity around Tamahere has brought new developments for walkers, drivers and those who catch the bus – with more major changes ahead.

Residents and travellers of Newell Rd have been contending with major roadworks for weeks as a large section of the road, stretching from near the SH 1 end, is resurfaced and a footpath put in at a cost of $736,580.

Meanwhile, catching the bus from the SH 1 on-ramp bus-stop has become a drier prospect after a shelter was put up this week.

A commemoration service on Saturday, May 11 will remember a long-serving WDC environment planner. The service will be held at the future site of the Allan Turner Walkway.
