Mayors eye $10M kickstart

The Waikato Mayoral Forum has work underway to identify more than $10 million of “shovel-ready” projects to stimulate the Waikato economy.

Forum chair, Waikato District Mayor Allan Sanson, said the projects sought should be ready to go within six months of the lockdown end in order to contribute to a substantial stimulus of the local economy and create jobs.

Historic figure sealed

Peacemaker Wiremu Tamihana, the Ngati Haua chief who is Tamahere’s first person of historic significance, is to have his name sealed in local memory.

The new road linking Devine and Airport Roads is to be named Wiremu Tamihana Drive, further marking the kingmaker’s historic contributions locally. A signboard already features on Bruntwood Rd.

Waikato District Council Tamahere ward councillor Wally Hayes said the road name was unanimously approved by the Infrastructure committee at its recent meeting.
